chatter matter
With the end of 2017, we saw a plethora of movies releasing off and on. A handful of films appeared to be super hits, while the rest of them didn’t impress the masses much. Pakistani cinema is in the 10th year of its cinematic revival and still struggling to give us a major chunk of good films with a striking storyline, and technicalities. The past year closed down with the release of director Mohsin Ali’s ‘Chupan Chupai’ and year 2018 began with its first Pakistani release ‘Parchi’ directed by Azfar Jafri. The movies are still in theatres, so don’t miss them if you really want to experience what our desi cinema has to offer with these new ventures. Read on...
Hide and seek with a rollercoaster of fun filled moments

Starring Ahsan Khan and Neelum Munir - the film appears to be a rollercoaster of some fun moments. Produced by Zayed Sheikh and Ray Khan of Huzu productions, Chupan Chupai is a rom-com thriller that offers an impressive direction, cinematography and comparatively a good storyline. Co-written by Mohsin Ali, it is a light hearted comedy film that revolves around Babu bhai (Ahsan Khan), who makes his living with small kidnappings. The story unfolds a number of incidents and several twists and turns when Babu kidnaps the minister’s son, Bobby (Faizan Khwaja), who has his own evil plans. “It’s a story from the streets in which the guy tries to sort things out but the situation takes a completely different turn,” says the lead actor Ahsan Khan.
Neelam Munir, who has made her movie debut with ‘Chupan Chupai’, plays her role with aplomb. The cast of the film also includes NAPA graduates Zayed Razzaque Sheikh, Ali Rizvi and Vajdaan Shah. Though the actors are new, they impressed the audience with their strong characters. While veteran actors like Javed Sheikh, Talat Hussain, Rehan Sheikh, Sakina Samo, Adnan Jaffar and Saife Hassan were as usual great on their parts. .
The movie was premiered in Karachi with a star-studded event attended by a number of celebrities, socialites and media persons. Apart from the movie cast, former cricketer Younus Khan, Humayun Saeed, Adnan Tipu, Sara Hirji - who was also seen in a cameo role - Ghana and Jiya Ali were spotted on the red carpet among others.
Interestingly, the first half of the movie has amusing moments to offer, but it is the second half which is more intriguing, pacy and devoid of dull moments. With some really good scenes and punchlines, ‘Chupan Chupai’ is a must-watch. So go grab your tickets now!
No ‘Parchi-s’ like this anymore!
Starring Hareem Farooq, Ali Rehman Khan, Usman Mukhtar and Ahmed Ali Akbar, ‘Parchi’ is yet another experiment by director Azfar Jafferi after his last flick, ‘Janaan’. The story of the movie is simple yet fails to provide a fresh feel to the audiences. The opening starts with Ali Rehman Khan as ‘Bash’. He’s been given a parchi by mafia ringleader Zodiac (Shafqat Cheema) and has to muster up fifty lacs in four days. He enlists the help of friend Saqlain (Ahmed Ali Akbar), brother Bilal (Usman Mukhtar) and Bholay, who collectively go on an adventure to get the money in time to save Bash. Hareem Farooq as ‘Eman’, is the daughter of estranged father Zodiac, who is vengeful after he kills her mother. The movie remains unsuccessful in establishing depths between the characters and giving us a strong story.
Oher members in the film include Shafqat Khan, Mojiz Hasan, Mahenur Haider, Shafqat Cheema, Salmaan Shaukat and Faiza Saleem. Written by Shafqat Khan, ‘Parchi’ is the third venture of IRK films.
Recently, the movie was premiered in Karachi which was attended by prominent celebrities and media personalities. Humayun Saeed, Shehzad Sheikh, Aamina Sheikh, Mohib Mirza, Sanam Saeed, Yasir Hussain and Adnan Siddiqui were seen on the red carpet to support their friends and Pakistani cinema. Regarding the film and her expectations, actor and co-producer of Parchi, Hareem Farooq states, “I am completely over-whelmed with the love and support given by the people always. I hope the audiences will also like the movie.”
Despite a weak storyline, the film has gotten decent box office numbers. If you have time on your hands, check out this movie in theatres near you.
